ANNA VIOLA HALLBERG

Artist/Curator

Current creates layers of time through dance improvisation - in between reality and fiction - performed as a ritual for resistance in a place where rice fields, fish ponds and gardens currently are replaced by fancy buildings and crowded highways. Current is a visual journey of struggle and hope.

Anna Viola Hallberg's work - as an artist and curator - interacts with specific communities, while addressing social or political contingencies and by this, taking on a critical stance towards public space/sphere an in the process relating to existential matters for the indiviualas as well as through society.

Hallberg's artistic practice is informed by the notion of in-betweenness, as personal experience and geopolitical position. Her methodology in the immersive space-narrations of video, sound, photography, and text brings forward a discussion on the documentary of experience, remembrance, and emotions rendering collective memory/affect and the work for social justice.

Hallberg's practice, based on dialogical aesthetics, explores the relationships between embodiment/experience and audiovisuality, spatiality and time, through discursive and immersive video-based installations. She works with subordinate thematics from a documentary point of departure focusing on experiences and emotions. At times connecting the material with archival discoveries. .

Hallberg works with Ami Skånberg (BERG DUO) "Working at the intersection of lens and embodied practices - we are interested in movement and space within and beyond language, and ask how movement can bring spaces together, and how several spaces can be made into one, through embodiment. As time collapses, space is put at the forefront of our artistic research.
In 2024 they launched CURRENT, the first series of works. Walking is an integral part of their artistic practice."
Jonkopings Lansmuseum

The curatorial work spans from video-based exhibitions to initiatives, focusing on counter publics and art beyond the urban, working with select source communities and their agency often upon strategic and curatorial development of publicly funded art, primarily in the field of; participatory, engaged, and critical practices. For Hallberg engagement in seminars, workshops, presentations and walking are an integral part of her practice. Hallberg is The BKN Fellow (artist/curator) at Björkö Konstnod in the northern archipelago of Stockholm. Previously she was the curator and co-founder of AiRS, Socially Engaged Art Residency at Skovde Art Museum, Sweden and commissioned curator of Distancio fror Region Jönköping, Sweden.

Making the Immortal is a poetical/political non-fiction film and installation by Anna Viola Hallberg and Bjorn Perborg exploring man’s quest to be remembered. This is made via the life and work of a portrait painter who passed away half a decade ago, Bror Kronstrand. Once an acclaimed artist who traveled the world extensively, today he is almost completely forgotten.

Making the Immortal is a subjective work where two artists reflect upon the traces of a third. The project is predominantly built upon archive material that has been reformatted to the selected narrative(s). Private photographs, newspaper clippings, objects, 16 and 35 mm film are taken further through video, photography, slideshows, facsimiles, and enlarged segments of letters.
IMPERIAL DIFFERENCES
Recursive Distance
Lulea Konsthall

Typologies of Silence is a set of social situations where the discourse has been submerged as if there is something that needs to remain hidden. The narratives explore the path between fact and fiction in order to obtain status. In Hallbergs work this leakage is explored up on as she brings forward and critiques the fragile state of the subject, intertwined with contemporary contingencies touching up on geopolitics, rememberance and status within society.

Kronstrand made this journey primarily to see the city of the Aztec. He started out in November 1923 and left Mexico in January 1924. At the time Veracruz was a major port of entry for European immigrants today. The same district today is frequented by the cargo trains with immigrants from the south “La Bestia”. Kronstrand made a number of portraits of prominent people during his stay in Mexico City. Memory is the leakage between Kronstrands and Hallberg's journey in Mexico in two different centruries.

ORGANISM
Prototype

Prototype of counter-public response to the dramatic lack of studio spaces in Stockholm. The concept developed by MONUMENT STUDIOS can be implemented in rural areas as in outer and inner cities. ORGANISM was initiated as a social art project with rhizomatic and sociocratic methodologies at the crossroads of sustainable, and affordable art studios and possibilities to show art, interlinked with responsible urban planning and counter-publics.

In the spring of 2020 we are looking into building a consortium to see if we can take the idea into reality. The volumes are constructed from sustainable materials and based on a circular economy. They are semi-permanent urbanartgardens where the artists follow the cluster as they reach a new destination. This way continuity in production is maintained and the peer group remains more stable. The studio dimension is constructed to give the best possible environment for the artists to affordable rent.

The in-between spaces are used for art production and exhibitions and are set up to embrace public interlocutions. We see the meetings with policymakers and public officials as an ongoing intervention to present new perspectives on art and artists in society. Collaboration between Anna Viola Hallberg and Camilla Wessman.
